Tokyo Luggage Storage: Silk Crane vs Coin Lockers
Share
Skip the Tokyo locker search and the journey back for your suitcase. With Silk Crane, send extra luggage from your hotel front desk or a convenience store, travel with a smaller bag and arrange delivery to a later hotel. Choose monthly or annual storage; shipping is charged separately.
A locker holds your suitcase in one place. Silk Crane lets it wait while your trip moves on. If the bag can skip your next stops, you can receive it at a different hotel or in another city instead of returning to the original locker. For a bag you need again this afternoon, local holding is the practical choice.
Choose your luggage storage plan
When Silk Crane works better than a Tokyo locker
The advantage is a simpler journey: send the suitcase from where your day begins and have it delivered where you need it later. You do not have to build the rest of the holiday around the place you left it.
No trip to find a suitable locker
With a locker: take the suitcase to the locker bank, find a vacant compartment that fits and leave time for another option if it is full.
With Silk Crane: sign up, use the supplied sending instructions and send from your hotel front desk or a convenience store. You still arrange the shipment, but you do not need to take the bag to a station storage point.
No return journey to collect the suitcase
With a locker: the bag stays where you put it. Your route needs to bring you back to that locker before its collection deadline.
With Silk Crane: arrange delivery to your later hotel. Stay in Shinjuku at the beginning and finish in Ginza, or continue to Kyoto and Osaka; the receiving hotel does not have to be near the sending point.
The bag can skip several stops
With a locker: check the maximum storage period, daily charging rules and access hours before leaving Tokyo. A locker suited to an afternoon is not automatically suited to a week away.
With Silk Crane: keep the suitcase in monthly or annual storage while you travel with what you need. Arrange delivery in advance, with shipping time allowed. There is no need to retrieve and carry that suitcase at every stop.
Tokyo shopping need not travel through the whole holiday
With a locker: the purchases wait locally until you collect them and carry them onward.
With Silk Crane: pack the purchases you will not need during the next part of Japan and send them into storage. Enjoy the shopping when you find it, then receive the packed belongings at your later hotel.
Choose a locker or local counter when you need the bag back today. Silk Crane is planned storage with shipping and later delivery, not instant retrieval. Its advantage is the collection trip you can avoid; compare the full storage and shipping cost rather than assuming it is always cheaper.
Where can you store luggage in Tokyo?
Your hotel before check-in or after checkout
Start with reception if you are staying nearby. Ask whether they can hold your bags, when collection ends and whether there is a charge. A convenient hotel stop can leave you free for lunch or a walk. Holding bags between two separate stays needs a separate agreement; do not assume it is included.
Station coin lockers
Lockers suit bags you will collect at the same station. Save the locker number, floor and nearest gate, and photograph the location. A station name alone may not be enough when you return to a large interchange.
GO TOKYO’s luggage guide lists approximate fees of ¥400–500 for small lockers, ¥500–600 for medium, ¥700–800 for large and about ¥1,200 for extra-large. Check the actual compartment, charge and time limit before paying.
Baggage counters and bookable local storage
A counter can be useful when your suitcase will not fit a locker. Networks such as Bounce let you compare local options online. Use the individual location’s address, opening hours, bag rules and total price; a citywide starting price does not describe every location.
At Tokyo Station, inside-gate and outside-gate counters serve different routes. Our Tokyo Station luggage storage guide explains that distinction. Collection must fit the chosen facility’s hours.
Choose the Tokyo area that fits your day
The most useful storage point is one you can return to comfortably. A locker across town can turn a simple pickup into another train journey.
- Tokyo Station and Marunouchi: use the station counter guide for rail departures and Yaesu coach guide for the separate bus terminals.
- Shinjuku and Shibuya: check the Shinjuku Station guide or Shibuya Station guide before choosing a gate or locker bank.
- Ueno and Asakusa: plan around the Ueno station route or your Asakusa sightseeing stop.
- Shopping: the Ginza guide and Ikebukuro guide help when your purchases grow during the trip.
- Flying: use the Haneda guide or Narita guide; plan the terminal as well as the airport.
Tokyo shopping now, a smaller bag for Kyoto

Imagine a few Tokyo shopping days followed by Kyoto and Kanazawa. The suitcase contains clothes and purchases you will not need until the end of the holiday. Pack those together, sign up for Silk Crane and use the supplied instructions to send from your hotel front desk or a convenience store.
Keep your travel documents, medicine and the belongings needed for the next stops with you. Arrange delivery to your final hotel in advance. That hotel can be in a different city; the trip does not need to loop back to the original storage point.
A convenience-store stop, then a lighter day
Already out with a suitcase you will not need for the next part of the trip? Picture sending it from a convenience store, then carrying on with a small bag. Sign up for Silk Crane, follow the supplied sending instructions, keep your essentials during shipping and arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan.

Overnight storage or delivery to a later stop?
For a suitcase needed tomorrow morning, choose local holding that explicitly allows overnight storage. Confirm when you can collect it; overnight acceptance does not mean round-the-clock access.
For a week away or another visit to Japan, read our guide to longer luggage storage from Tokyo. Silk Crane offers monthly and annual storage arranged by shipping. It is not a Tokyo walk-in counter or a same-day collection service.
If the bag should go straight to your next hotel without waiting in storage, direct forwarding may fit. Ask about the arrival date and receiving arrangements before sending. The official Tokyo luggage guide explains hotel and airport delivery options.
What will your storage plan actually cost?
For local holding, compare the charge for your suitcase size, the number of items and every charged day. Check whether crossing a daily cutoff adds another charge. Include the journey back to collect the luggage.
For Silk Crane, compare the storage plans with the separate shipping estimates. The useful comparison is the complete itinerary, not a locker’s daily rate against a storage plan without shipping.
Tokyo luggage storage questions
Is Silk Crane better than a Tokyo coin locker?
For luggage that can skip several stops, Silk Crane saves the trip to a station storage point and the return journey for collection. Send from your hotel front desk or a convenience store and arrange delivery to a later hotel. For a bag you need again in a few hours, a locker or local counter is usually the better fit. Allow shipping time and compare storage plus separate shipping charges.
Can I store a large suitcase in Tokyo?
Yes, but measure it before choosing a locker. If it does not fit, compare a baggage counter or a bookable location’s size rules. For belongings you will need later in the trip, Silk Crane’s booking page explains the storage choices.
Can I leave luggage at a hotel where I am not staying?
Ask that hotel directly. Do not plan around an assumption that reception will accept bags from non-guests. A bookable local storage location can give you a clearer collection plan.
Can I send a suitcase after checkout?
Yes. Sign up for Silk Crane, use the supplied sending instructions and send from a convenience store. Keep what you need during shipping and arrange later delivery. If you need the bag again today, use local holding.
