Aso and Kusasenri: Enjoy the Grasslands with Less Luggage
Share
Give Kusasenri’s wide grasslands a day with less to carry. Send the extra suitcase from your hotel to Silk Crane, explore with a smaller bag and arrange delivery to a later hotel. Monthly and annual storage lets spare clothing and shopping skip the mountain bus and the journeys that follow. Shipping is charged separately.
Picture a grassland day during a Kyushu journey
Imagine a Kumamoto stay followed by Aso and more nights elsewhere in Kyushu. Your second suitcase holds purchases and clothes you will use later. Arrange shipment from your hotel to Silk Crane and keep the next stage’s essentials with you.
Take a small shoulder bag toward Kusasenri, enjoy the open grassland views and choose a museum pause if it suits the weather and your interests. Arrange delivery of the stored suitcase to a later hotel in advance. The extra case stays out of the paths and mountain bus journey.

Leave a bag needed tonight around the return route
The Aso Station luggage guide covers JR lockers and Michi no Eki Aso’s counter service. Choose the arrangement before boarding the mountain bus and check its collection deadline.
If the outing starts and finishes at your hotel, ask about holding there. Do not arrive at the grasslands depending on an unverified large-suitcase locker. Keep weather layers, water, medicine and travel documents in your day bag.
Treat crater access as a separate decision
The official Aso crater restriction notice showed Level 2 restrictions when checked on 29 September 2026: entry within roughly one kilometre of the crater was prohibited. The crater shuttle operator also reported suspension. A ticket or an older itinerary cannot override a closure.
Kusasenri, the museum, Asosanjo Terminal and the crater are different places. Check the current notice and follow local signs for the areas open that day. Do not interpret access to the mountain terminal as access to the crater or try to walk around a closed gate.
Enjoy Kusasenri at an unhurried pace
Kusasenri is a broad highland grassland with a pond and mountain scenery. The prefecture’s Aso landscape guide describes this pastoral part of Aso. Keep to permitted visitor routes and give grazing animals space.
The Aso Volcano Museum offers a separate indoor stop nearby. Choose the visit around your interests, the weather and the return journey. Comfortable shoes and a layer suit a day that can feel different from the city below.
Use the right stop and leave a return margin
Sanko’s local Aso mountain-bus page covers the station route through Kusasenri. Look for the Kusasenri Aso Volcano Museum stop if that is your outing; do not stay aboard simply because a later stop sounds closer to the volcano.
Check the current outward and return timetable. Boarding is first come, first served, and a busy bus can change your connection. Include time for any bag collection before the next train or hotel transfer. Our Kumamoto city guide covers the city portion separately.
Questions before your visit
Can I assume the crater is open if the bus runs?
No. The local mountain bus, terminal and crater shuttle are separate. Follow the current official crater restrictions.
Is Kusasenri the crater rim?
No. Kusasenri is a separate grassland sightseeing area with the volcano museum nearby.
Where should I put a suitcase for the outing?
Arrange hotel or station-area holding before the mountain trip, then allow time to return to the same collection point.
How does Silk Crane help with Aso?
Send the spare case from your hotel into storage before this part of the trip. Enjoy Aso with a smaller bag and arrange later hotel delivery; shipping is separate.
Send the extra suitcase and enjoy what comes next
Choose your Silk Crane storage plan, follow the sending instructions and ask your hotel front desk to help arrange shipment. Monthly and annual storage lets shopping and spare clothes skip the next journeys, with delivery arranged when you need them again. Shipping is charged separately.
Keep your documents, medicine and clothes for the coming days with you. Confirm that your later hotel can receive the suitcase and allow time for delivery. The extra case can stay out of the local sightseeing route.
