Why is Yakusugi Special and Exceptionally precious?

- 2,000 to 4,000 years of life

Yakushima, along with the Shirakami-Sanchi, became the first natural heritage site in Japan to be registered on the World Heritage list in 1993. Covering 21% of the entire island, the registered area boasts Yakusugi forests with trees aged between 2,000 and 4,000 years. These forests, predominantly in government-owned conservation areas, have remained untouched since the Meiji era.

Known for its beautiful wood grain, Yakusugi is a cherished material for crafting. The majestic and divine presence of Yakusugi is derived from its origin as giant cedars aged over 1,000 years, thriving on Yakushima Island.

"Place of gods"

The primary meaning of Yakusugi is "the dwelling place of gods." Revered for its unwavering life force, these cedars with a lifespan exceeding 2,000 years symbolize a connection to the divine.

In Feng Shui: Healthy Long Life

In Feng Shui, Yakusugi signifies "health fortune" as it aligns with the wood element, strengthening the foundation of health. The island's rich vitality, coupled with the enduring strength of Yakusugi, is considered a powerful force for "resisting diseases and promoting a healthy, long life."

The spiritual significance of Yakusugi lies in its embodiment of "natural energy." Thriving since ancient times, Yakusugi stands as evidence of nature's abundant energy.

Yakusugi's Effects:

  1. Protective from Netatives: Yakusugi, referred to as "厄過ぎ" (yakusugi), serves as a protective charm. Rather than purifying everything, it creates a sanctuary around the wearer, emitting waves that repel negative forces.

  2. Longevity: The long life force of Yakusugi, nurtured over extended periods in the sacred forest believed to house gods, makes it a charm for longevity.

  3. Healing: The healing effects of Yakusugi signify liberation from daily mental tension. Experience relaxation and sound sleep, releasing the stress of daily life.

Additional Note: In 1993, with Yakushima's designation as a World Heritage site, logging was completely prohibited. Only buried logs, known as "土埋木" (domaiboku), were auctioned in the timber market. This referred to logs left on the ground after being logged during the Edo period. In 2001, naturally grown Yakusugi logging ceased, with only stumps and fallen trees transported to Kagoshima mainland 2-3 times a year. In March 2019, auctions were entirely prohibited, making Yakusugi an unattainable timber. The remaining Yakusugi crafts are now considered exceptionally precious.
