Glowing lantern floats and a small-town summer evening.
Yakumo’s lantern-float parade is a reason to pause on the journey through southern Hokkaido: sculpted illuminated figures, local teams and an evening shared along the town streets. With Silk Crane, send your extra suitcase from your hotel front desk or a convenience store, travel with a smaller bag and arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan. Monthly and annual storage plans are available; shipping is charged separately.

- Choose your festival: Early July is the usual lantern-float period; the shrine festival is a separate June event.

- Plan the journey: check the current programme, evening transport and accommodation before committing to a festival night.
A festival pause between longer rail journeys
Imagine traveling through southern Hokkaido with shopping and an extra suitcase for a later stop. You would like a small-town festival night rather than another hurried transfer. Sign up with Silk Crane and follow the supplied sending instructions. Send the spare suitcase from your hotel front desk or a convenience store; keep clothes, medicines, documents and everything needed during shipping.
Keep your overnight essentials in a smaller bag and settle into Yakumo before the lanterns begin to glow. Arrange delivery of the stored suitcase to a later Japan hotel in advance, without a return trip to collect it.

Watch the town light up
Yakumo’s official event calendar is the starting point for its early-July Dashi Gyoretsu. Large illuminated figures move through town with music and local groups, creating a very different evening from a city beer garden or a waterfront fireworks show.
Check the current route, procession hours and any weather announcement. Arrive before the main movement starts, choose a permitted spectator space and let the floats come to you. Good viewing does not require following every float through the whole route.

Make the daylight part of the stay
Yakumo sits beside Funka Bay on the rail corridor through southern Hokkaido. A festival visit can include a slower meal and time to appreciate the surrounding landscape, rather than only an arrival just before dark. Use the Yakumo town website to choose currently open local stops.
The town calendar also lists the Yakumo Shrine festival in June. It is a different celebration, so a July lantern visit should not promise shrine-festival events too. If the June traditions are your priority, build the dates around that announcement.
Keep the daytime plan modest if you want a long evening. A meal before the procession and a short walk can be enough; a smaller bag makes it easy to settle into the town’s rhythm.
Check the night’s final connection
Use current rail timetables for Yakumo and check whether the evening event leaves a workable onward journey. Being on a railway line does not mean a late departure will match the festival programme.
For the most relaxed night, investigate accommodation before committing to the parade date. If continuing to Hakodate or another region, treat that as the next leg of the holiday and allow the festival its own evening.

Keep what you need for summer, send the spare suitcase
Send ordinary luggage from your hotel front desk or a convenience store to Silk Crane, then arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan. Monthly and annual storage plans are available; shipping is charged separately. Keep layers for cool evenings, rain protection, medicines, documents and everything needed during shipping.
Plan your stored luggage’s later delivery ahead of time. For a bag needed again tonight, ask your hotel about local holding. Storage fits the belongings you want out of the way between parts of your trip.
