Tokachi Summer Festivals: Kamishihoro Balloons & Obihiro Nights
Share
Big skies, balloon mornings and bright river nights.
Tokachi gives summer celebrations room to breathe: hot-air balloons above Kamishihoro, fireworks over the Tokachi River and community festivities in Obihiro. With Silk Crane, send your extra suitcase from your hotel front desk or a convenience store, travel with a smaller bag and arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan. Monthly and annual storage plans are available; shipping is charged separately.
Make room for your summer holiday
At a glance
- A smaller bag: send from your hotel front desk or a convenience store, then plan later delivery. Shipping is charged separately.
- Choose your festival: Early August is a useful starting point for balloons; Obihiro’s fireworks and Heigen celebrations cluster around mid-August.
- Enjoy the place: Choose between a country festival base and city nights, with time for Tokachi meals.
- Plan the journey: check the current programme, evening transport and accommodation before committing to a festival night.
A lighter journey from country skies to city celebrations
Imagine a longer Hokkaido trip that includes a balloon-festival visit and several days in Obihiro. The spare suitcase holds shopping for a later stop. Sign up with Silk Crane and follow the supplied sending instructions. Send the spare suitcase from your hotel front desk or a convenience store; keep clothes, medicines, documents and everything needed during shipping.
Take a smaller bag with layers for early starts and evenings, and give each festival its own place in the route. Arrange delivery of the stored suitcase to a later Japan hotel in advance, without a return trip to collect it.

Kamishihoro: start with the sky
The Hokkaido Balloon Festival usually takes place in early August at Kamishihoro’s aviation park. Watching balloons prepare and rise above the open landscape is the central pleasure.
Competition flights, tethered rides and any evening glow are different activities with their own arrangements. Weather can change operations, and a festival ticket or a visit to the grounds is not a guaranteed balloon ride. Read the current organizer information and leave room for a changed programme.

Obihiro: fireworks followed by city celebrations
Around mid-August, the Kachimai Fireworks draws attention to the Tokachi River. Plan ticketed viewing and transport in advance; do not assume you can arrive late and find equivalent access anywhere along the river.
The Obihiro Heigen Festival brings drumming, dancing and community events into the city around the same part of August. Check the programmes separately: the fireworks show and the city festival are distinct events.
Between nights out, leave time for a Tokachi meal, a bakery or a café. A slower city morning can be a welcome balance after a long riverside evening. Choose currently open places through local visitor information rather than relying on a festival stall being there the next day.
Tokachi needs a regional plan
Kamishihoro is not an Obihiro city-center venue. Check the road connection to the aviation park and transport for early activities. A city hotel alone does not resolve an early-morning country departure.
Compare festival dates, book the nights you need and plan the final approach to each venue. Carry a light layer and rain protection, and give the next day enough flexibility after major events.

Keep what you need for summer, send the spare suitcase
Send ordinary luggage from your hotel front desk or a convenience store to Silk Crane, then arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan. Monthly and annual storage plans are available; shipping is charged separately. Keep layers for cool evenings, rain protection, medicines, documents and everything needed during shipping.
Plan your stored luggage’s later delivery ahead of time. For a bag needed again tonight, ask your hotel about local holding. Storage fits the belongings you want out of the way between parts of your trip.
Before you plan your summer visit
Does admission guarantee a balloon ride?
No. Tethered rides have separate arrangements and depend on operating conditions.
Can I assume balloons will fly in any weather?
No. Check the organizer’s current flight and event announcements.
Are Kachimai and Heigen the same festival?
No. They are separate Obihiro events around mid-August, with separate programmes and venues.
Can I use Obihiro as a base for Kamishihoro?
Only with a workable connection to the actual festival ground and the activities you want, especially early starts.
