Make room for your summer holiday
At a glance
- A smaller bag: send from your hotel front desk or a convenience store, then plan later delivery. Shipping is charged separately.
- Choose your festival: Hokuryu’s festival runs across part of July and August; Numata’s lantern festival is usually in late August.
- Enjoy the place: Choose a sunflower visit or a lantern night first; their best periods need not overlap.
- Plan the journey: check the current programme, evening transport and accommodation before committing to a festival night.
A country visit with room to stay late
Picture a Hokkaido journey that leaves the big city for a few days in Sorachi. Your spare suitcase contains shopping and clothes for a later destination. Sign up with Silk Crane and follow the supplied sending instructions. Send the spare suitcase from your hotel front desk or a convenience store; keep clothes, medicines, documents and everything needed during shipping.
Keep what you need in a smaller bag and give either the flower fields or the lantern procession an unhurried visit. Arrange delivery of the stored suitcase to a later Japan hotel in advance, without a return trip to collect it.

Hokuryu: a festival around a living landscape
The Hokuryu Sunflower Festival usually spans part of late July and August. The fields are the main attraction, with visitor activities and food arrangements adding to the outing.
Look at recent flowering updates before choosing your day. A festival opening period is not a promise that every section is at its best. Follow the designated routes through the visitor area, leave working fields alone and bring sun and rain protection for an exposed outdoor visit.

Numata: a night built around illuminated floats
The Numata Yotaka Andon Festival is normally a late-August event. Large, brightly lit lantern floats and their forceful encounters create an intense spectacle watched from the designated public areas.
This is a different trip from a relaxed flower-field afternoon. Follow stewards’ instructions, keep clear of moving floats and choose a viewing place before the busiest action. Food and a town walk can fill the earlier part of the evening.
Do not build an itinerary on an assumed overlap. Hokuryu’s announced festival period can end before Numata’s lantern nights. If both appeal, compare the current calendar and flowering conditions before deciding whether one holiday can reasonably include them.
Plan Sorachi at regional scale
Hokuryu and Numata are separate rural destinations. Check the route to the actual venue, not only to a nearby rail station, and work out the return before traveling. A daytime bus connection may not suit the end of a lantern festival.
An overnight stay or a prearranged road journey can make the late event easier. Keep the next morning flexible and use current local announcements for parking, temporary services and street restrictions.

Keep what you need for summer, send the spare suitcase
Send ordinary luggage from your hotel front desk or a convenience store to Silk Crane, then arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan. Monthly and annual storage plans are available; shipping is charged separately. Keep layers for cool evenings, rain protection, medicines, documents and everything needed during shipping.
Plan your stored luggage’s later delivery ahead of time. For a bag needed again tonight, ask your hotel about local holding. Storage fits the belongings you want out of the way between parts of your trip.
Before you plan your summer visit
Can I see peak sunflowers and Numata lanterns on one weekend?
Do not assume so. Festival dates and flowering conditions may not overlap.
Does Hokuryu’s full festival period mean full bloom?
No. Use recent flowering reports to choose the best day for your visit.
Can I stand close to the lantern-float clashes?
Follow the designated viewing boundaries and stewards’ directions around moving floats.
Is a train ticket enough to plan the visit?
No. Check the final connection to the actual rural venue and your return after the event.
