5 Otaru Station Luggage Storage Options Compared
Share
Leave room for Otaru’s glass shops and canal walks without taking the spare suitcase through every stop. With Silk Crane, send it from your hotel front desk or a convenience store and arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan.
Monthly and annual storage plans are available, with shipping charged separately. If you need the case after today’s visit, compare station lockers, tourist-information holding, COTARU and Kitarin. Check the collection commitment before heading down toward the canal.

This is Silk Crane’s comparison, not an independent ranking. Choose by duration, bag size and collection plan. Prices are in yen; check the current charge for your bag and dates.
| Option | Price basis | Collection | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silk Crane | Monthly or annual plan + separate shipping | Later delivery in Japan | An onward journey or repeat visit |
| JR station lockers | Small ¥400; medium ¥500; large ¥700–800 | Normally up to 3 days; bank rules apply | A return through Otaru Station |
| Station tourist information | Listing gives ¥500 or ¥700 per item/day | 10:30–17:30, same day | A staffed option without a street walk |
| COTARU | Storage only: ¥500 up to 200 cm; ¥800 above | At least 1 hour before closing | A larger case and an early return |
| Kitarin | Tourism listing: ¥500 per item | Seasonal schedule; confirm collection | A short walk from the station |
Walking estimates were checked October 5, 2026, from the starting point named beside each link. Add time for platforms, indoor navigation, crossings and the handoff. Indoor services are shown with operator maps instead of a street-walking estimate.
Glass shopping without the spare suitcase

Picture a traveler who has checked out and is moving through Otaru before continuing her Hokkaido holiday. Her second suitcase contains belongings for a later Tokyo stay. After signing up for Silk Crane, she uses the supplied instructions to send it from a convenience store.
Documents, medicine and clothes needed during shipping stay in her smaller bag. She can browse glass shops and meet her partner near the canal without returning to a station locker for that case. Delivery to their later hotel is arranged ahead. Breakable purchases need suitable packing before any shipment; a shop display is not evidence that an item is ready to travel.
Send before checkout or while you are out
Picture setting aside the suitcase you will not need for the next part of the trip. Send it from your hotel front desk before checkout, or from a convenience store while you are out. Sign up for Silk Crane, use the supplied sending instructions and keep your essentials during shipping. Arrange delivery to your later hotel in Japan.

1. Silk Crane: send the bag and arrange later delivery
Choose Silk Crane when your extra luggage can skip part of the journey. Send from your hotel front desk or a convenience store, keep a smaller bag and arrange delivery when you want the stored belongings again. There is no trip to a Silk Crane storage location or return to the same locker.
Cost: a monthly or annual plan, plus separate shipping. Compare the current storage plans together with sending and return-delivery costs. Silk Crane has no walk-in counter at Otaru Station and does not provide immediate retrieval or same-day local holding.
Sign up before sending and follow the supplied instructions. Keep documents, medicine and everything needed during shipping with you. The hotel and airport delivery guide explains how to plan the return. If you simply need the suitcase at your next hotel soon, direct forwarding may be the simpler choice.
2. JR lockers: a station collection point
JR Hokkaido’s locker directory lists Otaru charges of ¥400 small, ¥500 medium and ¥700–800 large. The normal limit is three days including deposit day. Check the selected bank’s current rules and compartment dimensions.
Save the locker number and surrounding signs before leaving. Keep the receipt or payment card ready for collection, and leave time to reach your train after retrieving the case.
3. Tourist information: holding inside the station
The Otaru Tourism Association’s station holding guide places the service beside the tourist-information counter. It lists ¥500 or ¥700 per item per day, with use 10:30–17:30 and collection that day.
Ask for the current charge and acceptance conditions at the desk. The association’s page refers to a long-running service rather than a newly dated price announcement. This option saves the street walk, but it still requires an early enough return from the canal or shops.
4. COTARU: check the storage-only collection rule
COTARU’s own baggage-storage guide gives storage-only prices of ¥500 up to 200 cm combined length, width and height, or ¥800 above 200 cm. Collect at least one hour before closing; ask for the closing time on your date.
Walking directions from Otaru Station to COTARU — about 7 minutes / 500 m from Otaru Station’s map point. The address is 3-1-1 Inaho. Booking is useful during busy periods. Bicycle-rental customers have separate storage benefits; those should not be read as free holding for everyone.
5. Kitarin: nearby, with a seasonal schedule
The Otaru tourism listing for Kitarin gives ¥500 per item at Ichifuji Building 1F, 3-10-16 Inaho. Walking directions from Otaru Station to Kitarin — about 1 minute / 80 m from Otaru Station’s map point.
The city’s current Kitarin operating information notes reduced winter opening days and possible weather closures. Check your date and collection time directly rather than assuming year-round daily service. A nearby counter is only useful when its schedule fits your outing.
A convenience-store sending point in Inaho
Your hotel front desk or a convenience store can start the Silk Crane journey. Yamato’s shipping-service listing for 7-Eleven Otaru Inaho 3-chome identifies a sending point at 3-15-14 Inaho, with 24-hour opening. Use the carrier’s map for this Otaru store to locate it.
Sign up first and use Silk Crane’s supplied instructions. The store is an independent parcel-sending point, not a Silk Crane branch. Confirm dispatch timing and suitcase acceptance; the carrier excludes Size 180 and 200 parcels at convenience stores. Store opening all night does not mean a parcel leaves immediately.
Questions before choosing
Which Otaru counter can I use after an evening canal walk?
Do not assume the daytime counters will still be open. Tourist-information holding requires collection by 17:30, COTARU has an earlier storage-only cutoff relative to closing, and Kitarin’s schedule varies. Check a suitable locker’s access hours for later plans.
Do I need to return to the hotel to send my suitcase?
No. An ordinary suitcase can be sent from a convenience store after signup using the supplied instructions. Keep what you need during shipping and arrange later delivery. This is separate from leaving the case locally for the afternoon.
Enjoy the next stop with less to carry
