Nayoro & Shimokawa Winter Festivals: Snow Play & Candlelight
Share
Northern Hokkaido’s playful snow days and quiet candlelit evenings.
Travel north of Asahikawa for Nayoro’s community snow festival and Shimokawa’s ice candles. Each offers a reason to linger in a smaller Hokkaido town. With Silk Crane, send extra luggage from your hotel front desk or a convenience store and keep a smaller winter bag. Arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan; monthly and annual storage plans are available, with shipping charged separately.
Make room for your winter holiday
At a glance
- Travel lighter: send ordinary luggage from your hotel or a convenience store and arrange later delivery; shipping is separate.
- Nayoro: start with early February for snow play, local sculptures and festival activities.
- Shimokawa: look around mid-February for the Ice Candle Museum’s town-wide candlelight.
- Give each its time: compare weekends and evening transport before linking the towns.
Continue north with the bag you need
Picture a longer Hokkaido holiday after shopping in Sapporo or Asahikawa. The spare suitcase holds belongings for your later city stay. Sign up with Silk Crane, follow the supplied instructions and send it from your hotel or a convenience store.
Keep boots, warm layers, medicines and documents. Travel north with a smaller bag for snow play and candlelit walks, then arrange the stored suitcase’s delivery in advance for the next part of Japan.

Nayoro: enjoy the snow with the town
The Nayoro snow festival celebrates the city’s pride in its snow. Look at early February for planning. Recent programmes have included snow slides, community snow sculptures, illumination and organized games; the combination changes between winters.
This is a good place to give the afternoon over to the festival itself. Watch the local activities, choose something warm to eat and see how residents have shaped the snow. Check the current venue carefully: older travel guides may describe a different site or a former competition.
If an activity catches your eye, look for its own entry or booking instructions. A visitor’s afternoon can be enjoyable without entering a contest, and an evening programme may need a different transport plan from a daytime visit.
Shimokawa: handmade light across the snow
The Shimokawa Ice Candle Museum is an outdoor winter event despite its museum name. Residents make ice candles and light them around community venues, shops and homes. Look around mid-February, then check the announced festival days.
Candle flames inside clear ice bring a softer light than a large illuminated sculpture. Follow the public festival route, pause at the different arrangements and leave private entrances clear. A slow evening walk is the experience; there is no need to rush between every display.

Use the Hokkaido tourism festival guide alongside the organizer’s map to choose a starting point. Plan your meal and accommodation around the lighting period so that a warm break is part of the evening.
Plan an overnight stop around the evening
Nayoro and Shimokawa make a useful northern Hokkaido pairing, but the events can fall on different weekends. Choose one as the reason for your stay, then add the other only if the dates and transport work.
Nayoro is the rail gateway; the onward journey to Shimokawa needs a road connection. The Shimokawa access guide is the place to start. An arrival bus does not establish that a suitable service runs after the candles finish, so arrange the return or stay locally.
During a longer Nayoro stay, Sunpillar Park offers another winter outing, including seasonal curling facilities. Check the visitor session and equipment arrangements separately from the festival. Leave a meal and some unhurried town time between outdoor activities.
Pair the journey with our Asahikawa and Sounkyo story if your route continues through central Hokkaido.
Keep the winter bag, send the spare suitcase
Send ordinary luggage from your hotel front desk or a convenience store to Silk Crane, then arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan. Monthly and annual storage plans are available; shipping is charged separately. Keep warm layers, winter footwear, medicines, documents and everything you will need during shipping.
If this festival visit follows skiing, send skis or a snowboard from your hotel front desk or a carrier counter. Convenience-store sending is for ordinary luggage. Plan the stored luggage’s later delivery ahead of time. Direct forwarding may suit bags needed soon at the next stop; for belongings needed again tonight, ask your hotel about local holding.
Before you choose your festival dates
When should I start looking for these festivals?
Start with early February for Nayoro and around mid-February for Shimokawa, then compare the current organizer dates.
Is the Ice Candle Museum an indoor attraction?
The festival is an outdoor candlelight event around the town. Follow its current venue map and lighting schedule.
Can I return to Nayoro after the candles?
Check evening transport before booking. A local overnight stay may suit the event better than relying on a late connection.
Do I need to enter a competition?
No. Build a visit around viewing and the activities open to visitors; organized contests may require separate registration.
