Kitami & Rikubetsu Winter Festivals: Food, Snow & Firelight
Share
Outdoor barbecue in Kitami, then a different kind of winter celebration in Rikubetsu.
Kitami turns its love of barbecue into an outdoor winter event, while nearby festival days bring snow play and food. Farther along the road, Rikubetsu celebrates the deep cold with firelight and ice structures. With Silk Crane, send your spare suitcase from your hotel front desk or a convenience store and travel with a smaller winter bag. Arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan; shipping is charged separately from monthly or annual storage.
Make room for your winter holiday
At a glance
- Keep the winter essentials: send ordinary luggage from your hotel or a convenience store for storage and later delivery; shipping is separate.
- Kitami’s barbecue: look at early February and arrange an advance admission ticket.
- Kitami’s snow festival: check the separate early-February daytime programme near the station.
- Rikubetsu: look around the first weekend of February and plan a separate road journey.
Make the festival the evening’s main event
Imagine continuing east after shopping in Sapporo, with a suitcase you will not need until a later stay elsewhere in Japan. Sign up with Silk Crane, follow the supplied sending instructions and send it from your hotel or a convenience store.
Keep proper winter clothing, boots, medicines and documents. With a smaller bag, settle into Kitami for the festival and a warm hotel afterwards. Arrange the stored suitcase’s delivery ahead of the next part of your holiday.

Kitami: barbecue in the winter air
The Kitami Extreme-Cold Barbecue Festival makes the city’s barbecue culture the reason for a winter visit. Small charcoal grills, meat and onions bring people together outdoors in the cold. Look at early February, then build the trip around the announced event.
Arrange an advance admission ticket. Check the Kitami tourism event announcements well before travelling rather than expecting to buy a meal on arrival. The organizer explains what the ticket includes and how the evening works.
Dress for time sitting or standing outdoors. Keep your warm layers with you even if the suitcase has gone into storage, and choose accommodation with a practical return journey after the meal.
Stay for Kitami’s daytime snow festival
The Kitami Winter Festival is a separate event, generally in early February. Recent programmes have used the multipurpose plaza south of Kitami Station for snow play, ice and snow displays, food and stage activities.
It gives the trip a different pace: an afternoon watching the activities, a warm snack and time in the city before dinner. Check its own programme and entry arrangements. The barbecue’s advance-ticket requirement should not be treated as a ticket requirement for every winter event in Kitami.
Rikubetsu: firelight in a deeply cold town
The Rikubetsu Shibare Festival usually takes place around the first weekend of February. Its bonfire and ice structures make a striking setting for a small town that embraces its severe winter cold.

Visit for the public festival programme and follow the viewing areas around fires and structures. An overnight cold-endurance challenge, when offered, has separate advance application arrangements. It is not ordinary accommodation or something to assume you can join on arrival.
Give warmth and transport a real place in the plan: an indoor break before the outing, the clothing you need outside and a definite return journey or booked place to stay. A festival visit can be memorable without taking part in an overnight challenge.
Connect the festivals only when the dates work
Kitami and Rikubetsu are separate destinations. Check the current dates before treating them as one weekend, and use the town’s Rikubetsu access information to begin planning the journey. Rikubetsu is reached by road, not by a through passenger train from Kitami.
Confirm evening transport against the festival programme. If the connections do not work comfortably, choose the event you most want to see and enjoy a longer stay there. For a wider eastern Hokkaido route, compare the dates with Abashiri and Monbetsu’s winter festivals.
Keep the winter bag, send the spare suitcase
Send ordinary luggage from your hotel front desk or a convenience store to Silk Crane, then arrange delivery to a later hotel in Japan. Monthly and annual storage plans are available; shipping is charged separately. Keep warm layers, winter footwear, medicines, documents and everything you will need during shipping.
If this festival visit follows skiing, send skis or a snowboard from your hotel front desk or a carrier counter. Convenience-store sending is for ordinary luggage. Plan the stored luggage’s later delivery ahead of time. Direct forwarding may suit bags needed soon at the next stop; for belongings needed again tonight, ask your hotel about local holding.
Before you choose your festival dates
Do I need to book the outdoor barbecue?
Yes. Check advance admission ticket sales through the Kitami organizer before planning to attend.
Is the snow festival the same event as the barbecue?
No. Kitami Winter Festival has its own programme and visitor arrangements, even when the dates are close together.
Must I stay outside overnight in Rikubetsu?
No. The public festival visit is separate from any advance-registration cold-endurance challenge.
Can I take a train between Kitami and Rikubetsu?
Rikubetsu needs a road journey. Check current bus connections or arrange another suitable journey, including the return after the event.
